Dreaming Big for Dream On 3
By Harris Gagnon
What started as a required Bar Mitzvah project in 2016, grew into four years of my life’s work. I consider myself fortunate to have found an amazing platform at an early age, where I am able to impact kids with life-challenging issues in a significant (and positive) way.
For the past 4 years, I have been the organizer and founder of “Dream Ball for Dream On 3”. Taking my passion for basketball and being able to organize tournaments and clinics for children while raising funds for Dream On 3 has shaped my character into who I am today. Through organizing the event, getting sponsors, registering up kids, and running the day, I have been able to experience real-world problems and I have been able to grow as an individual. While I recognize I have become more confident in who I am and my own abilities, it is the indefinable feeling of giving to others that will carry me forward to continue similar charitable work.
I still find it hard to believe a teenage boy like me is able to have a lifelong impact on an entire family. I have enjoyed the personal connection I made with each Dream Kid and their family. The faces and reactions of each Dream Kid during “the reveal” will always stand out. Not only do I complete this journey with an unforgettable memory of each Dream Kid and experience, but I also hope I have been able to serve as a role model to the young students who participated in my event so that one day they will create their own change in the world.
As I head off to college, I do not know where I want to go or exactly what I want to do. I can only say for certain that I want to keep pursuing my passion of giving back and connecting with the community.
It has been an honor to work with Dream On 3, and as a result, I look forward to continuing my journey of giving back.
