Making Dreams Come True One Burpee At A Time
Last week The Beers and Burpees Charity Event welcomed over 750 people, athletes and non-athletes alike. They all had one goal, raise money to make dreams come true for Charlotte-area kids living with chronic illnesses, developmental disabilities, or life-altering conditions.
Some ran, some wall-balled, some burpeed, some drank beer than burpeed…get it? Seriously though, it was an impressive way to raise more than $50,000 in a single day. There was plenty of sweat but that was definitely outweighed by lots of smiles.
There are always many factors that contribute to a successful event (like the awesome sponsors) but, undeniably, this event has become one of the most charitable fitness events in Charlotte because of teamwork. And you know how we feel about teamwork – it is the foundation of our organization! Over 20 local gyms co-hosted, some sporting their ‘box” or gyms across their shirts and others jumped right into those super-soft Beers & Burpees t-shirts. Regardless of who they were representing, each and every person was there for something much bigger than themselves.
With five divisions, there is something for everyone. The event features a regular workout, competitive workout (beer is a must but there are prizes involved) a teen division and something for the “littles” – Brownies & Burpees! New to the event this year was an adaptive athletes division. It was more than a year in the making but with the help of Project Momentum Fitness it is now more inclusive, adaptive, & extraordinary than ever before!
The event also has a few special VIP appearances by past and upcoming Dream Kids. This year, we were joined by Dream Kids Preston & Parker, Dream Kid Michael, Dream Kid Jalen, Dream Kid Jonathan and Dream Kid Fonz. Having the Dream Kids in attendance allows event participants to learn more about them, their struggles and their dreams. It helps bring this event full circle for everyone involved, including the kids whose dreams are sponsored by the funds from this event. Dream Kid Jonathan was surprised by Rifton, a company that specializes in top quality, durable adaptive equipment. They presented Jonathan with and adaptive tricycle that will help to improve his leg strength and movement. There was even a surprise dream reveal for Dream Kid Ryan, (watch the video!) who learned that he would soon be traveling to Pittsburgh to see the Steelers play and meet his hero, Antonio Brown!
The Beers and Burpees Charity has been contributing to our organization for the last five years and has seen almost a 950% growth in that time. In 2013, they raised $4,800 and had 120 participants. This year, the final total was $50,068 with 750 participants!! Event Founder, Mike Dascal, attributes the success to “the entire Charlotte fitness community rallying around this event which gives them an opportunity to get in a great workout and enjoy an experience for the entire family where 100% of the proceeds are going to a great charity like Dream On 3!”
Each year, we are more and more impressed and humbled by the efforts of Mike & Laura Dascal, event founders, their volunteers, sponsors and all of the athletes that support our amazing Dream Kids by participating in Beers & Burpees. Thank you for your hard work and support!
